Arts / Warehouse District

The Neighborhood

The Warehouse District (named because it was heavily devoted to warehousing and manufacturing before shipping became containerized) is known today as the New Orleans Arts District. The transformation from an urban wasteland to what many have called the "SoHo of the South” began in 1976 with the opening of the Contemporary Arts Center (CAC). The area also houses the city’s lively Arts District, with major museums and a myriad of galleries along Julia Street. An Art Walk is held the first Saturday of each month from 6-9 p.m. with galleries in the neighborhood opening their doors to showcase their wares. As a designated Louisiana Cultural District, there is no sales tax charged on any original works of art sold in the Arts District!

There's plenty to offer within walking distance. Head to Pêche Seafood Grill for delicious seafood and raw bar, or make your way out to The Rusty Nail to enjoy a cocktail on their patio. For shopping, check out the Canal Place shopping mall. To explore the rest of the city, head to the nearby light rail station.
